This is a story of Western Hypocrisy with money thrown in from a country that preaches austerity to its people.
Sami al-Saadi and his family were forcibily handed over to the Lbyan Gaddafi regime in 2004. The family were in effect kidnapped in a joint US and UK operation. They were captured in Hong Kong and flown to Libya. There was no doubt that he would be incarcerated and face torture back in Libya as he had been an outspoken opponent of Gaddafi and his regime. That is what followed.
It is perhaps ironic that but for the Libyan revolution the rendition of Sami and his family may have never been publicly revealed. During the Libyan revolution, so supported by the West, papers relating to his rendition were found. The case has been ongong for some time but Mr al Saadi has decided to accept a £2.2 mil settlement. He said the money will help his children complete their education and pay for medical treatment he has needed following periods of torture.
It would be bad enough if this was an isolated incident but it is not.
Abdul Hakim Belhaj and his pregnant wife followed a similar fate. They were apprehended in Malaysia, again allegedly with involvement by MI6 and shipped of to Libya. Mr Belhaj has not settled his case and is pushing for an open trial. The authorities in the West will want anything but that.
In April 2012 we wrote a report regarding Mr Belhaj's rendition. At that time the question was being asked, Did the UK Government approve the rendtion of Abdel Belhaj, and that question is still unanswered by the British authorities.
These cases perfectly illustrate western hypocrisy. One minute Gaddafi is a tyrant and then we are all working together. Next thing you know we are working with rebels attempting to destroy his regime claiming that we have the best interests of the Libyan people in mind..
