UK foreign Secretary William Hague has condemned the violence in the Israel / Palestine region of the Middle East. He has however only condemned one side, Hamas, the Palestinian group. He has directly blamed Hamas for the death of three civilians in Israel today. In what this UK citizen finds an offensive move he has not condemned Israel for the assasination of a Hamas leader yesterday that also killed civilians. At least one Palestinian child was killed yesterday. A seven-year-old girl.
The timing of the now declared assasination attempts by Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahou may be simply due to an increased level of rocket attacks in Israel by Hamas. If we look at the situation more realistically and perhaps cynically it could be that the attacks are part of his election strategy. With an election imminent Netanyahou will be looking for the people's support.
We should never forget that Israelis occupy some territories where they have no right to be. The people of Palestine are hurt continually by both Hamas and Israel. Both sides are to blame and inevitably it will be the innocent on both sides that will suffer.
Simply choosing to be appalled at the deaths of Israeli civilians but ignoring those of Palestinians is more than offensive. It is a disgrace. As Israel now undertakes its latest mission to assassinate those who it believes are terrorists many innocents will die. There is no way that will not happen. Both sides have now indicated that they are committed to assasinating leaders.
It strikes this blogger as yet a further sign of Western hypocrisy that we flag wave and cheer on revolutionaries and terrorists in Libya, Syria, Egypt and beyond but condemn Palestinians fighting for what they belieive is a just cause.
The danger is that an escalation of conflict involving Israel will ultimately lead to global war or at least involve countries in the West. The Arab League have yet to declare their latest view on this increase in violent attacks.
