Op-Ed: Remember Charles or Charlie Manson? You will probably have to be over a certain age to remember this man serving time in a U.S. jail for murder.
Manson is in the news Tuesday following reports that the now 80-year-old mass murderer is to marry a 26-year-old girl.
His bride to be Afton Elaine Burton, who goes by the name “Star” has reportedly spent years trying to exonerate him but as she is aged just 26 our first thought is not that many years.
Star left home aged 19 and moved to California to be nearer to the man she loves, Manson.
She runs a handful of websites which all profess Manson's innocence.
Manson was jailed for his involvement in the brutal murders of seven people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate, (the late wife of film director Roman Polanski), and one unborn child in Los Angeles in 1969.
In 2013 Star claimed that she and Manson were getting married but he denied those claims. “That’s a bunch of garbage,” Manson said in the December 2013 interview. “That’s trash. We’re playing that for public consumption.”
This time though it appears the happy couple are both singing from the same song sheet.
The licence is valid for 90 days and the couple have until February to tie the knot.
They can invite up to 10 guests to the prison wedding, which will surely be a no frills affair?
Manson is not up for parole until 2027 when he will be in his nineties. Whether he will ever be paroled is debateable.
A petty criminal Manson spent years in and out of reform schools. Back in the community in 1967 he became linked to the music business and attracted a following -- they become the Manson family.
'Family' members are also still serving time for the parts they played in the murders.
Manson had a sad and sorry childhood. As a man he had a history of manipulation, controlling behaviour and mental illnesses which include schizophrenia and paranoid delusional behaviour. A lethal combination especially in the drug fuelled hippy days of the late 60's.
