The latest news regarding the dreadful tragedy in Connecticut, USA, is that 26 people are confirmed dead. Of those 20 were children. It is now believed that the shooter killed his mother, a teacher, at home before entering this school and killing the children in her class.
The man has been unofficially named as 20-year-old Adam Lanza. He entered the school dressed in fatigues and wearing a military type of protective vest. Did he use his mother's access to enter the school? It is known that the school had a controlled entry system and did not just allow people to enter at will. Yet for all that this tragedy could not be averted. You have to wonder why?
Up at the front of the answers is because it happened in a nation where gun controls are vague.
Yes there are gun controls but they vary from State to State. In 2012 there have been numerous shooting incidents in the USA at the forefront of World news. In an election year both Presidential candidates were afraid to upset the gun toting lobby of the USA. In the end they have paid a huge price for sitting on the fence.
President Obama's grief seemed genuine as yesterday he addressed the Nation. He may hold the "top job" in the USA but there are so many others who are responsible for the running of that country, and therefore many hold some blame. Many people in the USA hold the Constitution close to their hearts and minds which is in some ways understandable. Having fought for independence from Britain and a divisive civil war it was an important document. Is it still?
Legislation over the years tends to move with the times. Yes newest is not always best but neither is traditional tried and tested. If it was young working class kids in the UK would remain uneducated and work from a young age in sweat shops. In the past the UK thought it was fine for such children to sweep chimneys and work in factories so why would that practice change?
It changes due to our ongoing civilisation. There are certain things that become part of the past. Part of an uncivilised past. It may have been a relatively civilised time but everything is, as they say, relative.
If the people of the USA want to continue holding their age old Constitution to their breasts, so be it. Surely though it is time for change. Real change and not just empty words spoken following another tragedy.
Many of those who commit these crimes are armed to the teeth. They have been able to stock pile weapons and ammunition. There are many people who claim to have a legitimate right to bear arms in the USA who also go more than prepared. What justification can any civilian have for owning an extensive arsenal in their home? None it seems is the answer. You can talk and spin your situation to suit but if then end you become another statistic and flip you may wreck many other lives.
The USA now has some hard thinking to do. Following the cinema shooting in Aurora more people than ever hot footed to the nearest weapons outlet and armed themselves. An understandable response? Could be but simply adding further fuel to the fire is pointless.
There is much speculation about Mr Lanza. He has been described as a kid with problems. The son of an accountant and a teacher his was not a poor childhood as far as finances went. There are reports that he had a form of autism and was on medication. He is described as a bit of a "nobody" in life who will in death and as a result of his terrible actions live on in infamy.
Around the age of ten Mr and Mrs Lanza went their separate ways and locals have claimed that Adam and his brother were hit hard by the separation. What led up to yesterday's terrible incident may never be known. Investigations continue.
December 16, 2012 Updates
At time of writing it has been reported that Mr Lanza's mother was not working at the school but was unemployed. The report also claims that neither the man nor his mother was known at the school. This makes his entry into the school all the more disturbing. Just how was he able to gain entry? What was the axe he obviously felt he had to grind or was his just a random act of madness? It seems to have been planned at least in some way as Lanza drove 5 miles to the school.
The children who died were all aged 6 or 7. Amongst them was a British boy whose family had moved to the area two years ago. His brother survived the attack.
The investigations continue in the USA and updates will follow in due course. The USA will have to undertake a great deal of soul searching before it can move on. Notably gun laws in the USA will need to be addressed.
Thoughts remain with the bereaved and the community of Newtown.
