Russia maintains that it has a right to protect its interests in Crimea and those of Russian citizens in the region.
At the UK Security Council a US drafted document opposing the vote was supported by 13 Council members Saturday with Russia unsurprisingly using its veto. Russia's usual key ally abstained from the poll rather than supporting their traditional ally. That could be for a variety of reasons. Two which spring to mind are China is facing a growing separatist movemnet in parts of China and its is now a trading partner of the west, notably the USA.
We will update with the result of the vote as soon as it is available. The west may then begin immediate sanctions and Russia could retaliate in a tit for tat method. If it does the UK and Germany could be big financial losers.
