Elections in the West are a funny business. We live in "democracies" although sometimes it seems that our freedoms are being whittled away. The US election appears to have been ongoing forever. First there was an endless round of primaries and caucuses to select the leader of the Republican party or GOP. Televised election debates may have been entertaining but whether they are constructive is not clear. In recent years the UK has opted for similar TV debates and these have been welcomed by some. However they can lead to a person of style being elected over a person of substance.
Propaganda has always been a part of elections. it is often referred to as Spin rather than propaganda. Spin is a perfect word to describe what happens. The "truth" is spun to suit the individual. Perception is all important in an election. Let's face it the right speaker can make you believe anything. Whilst there will always be some people who can see beneath the election froth others will fall for it hook line and sinker. For many people elections are a necessary evil but they prefer not delve too deeply into the detail.
We must never forget though that "the devil is in the detail".
Coming across the image above of Donald Trump tickled our funny bone. However it just goes to show the lies people will spout in order to get the election result they want.
Some will try and say to you that they do not want political gain themselves from an election but many will be lying. Those who say "I want what is best for my country" are often looking a little closer to home.
The UK and the USA have hypocrisy and lies in common. During a UK election the Conservatives will promise anything in their election manifesto but break these promises one by one if elected. All UK Political Parties spin the truth as they try for our votes. Then if they have to work together, as in our current coalition, we are expected to forget what they have said about each other.
The GOP are currently trying to sell Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as America's Dream Team. As they do so, the rank and file of the Party will gather behind them in support. However trying to sell someone when you have slated them shows a lack of moral backbone. It also shows you do not have any ideals. Thankfully we do not have to vote in the US election. If we did the hypocrisy would sicken us. Those of you who do have a hard task before you. The White House appears to be for sale to the highest bidder.
