43-year-old Austrian Felix Baumgartner is no stranger to extreme challenges.
His latest challenge will be a history making one should he manage to achieve his goal.If he fails it could be curtains for Felix.
Felix is, as we write, attempting to skydive and then parachute from the edge of Space. Preparations have been on going for some time and accuracy is vital. The space suit he is wearing will offer him protection against temperatures that could freeze him followed by ones that could literally make his blood boil.
You can follow his Austrian . Updates and report to follow later. Good luck Felix
Update October 9, 2012 - 20:00 BST
Felix was to be lifted into space by a large inflated balloon. Something like the type that offer balloon rides for passengers. Attached to this though was not a traditional balloon basket but a capsule. For Felix this presented a personal challenge, claustrophobia. He is a man prepared to jump into the unknown but one who has to fight an intense fear. A phobia. His fear of confined spaces means that he is putting himself into an intolerable position. The capsule he was to travel in was small and restrictive, but even the space suit challenged his phobia.
A team of scientists have been supporting Felix. Their expertise was necessary to ensure that the capsule and space suit would offer safety fore Felix. The equipment must be ship shape and nothing left to chance. As the World held ts breath the balloon began to be inflated. It was quickly easy to see that the level of wind today would be problematic.
Full inflation of the balloon was not possible. The challenge had to be aborted, at least for today. Just when Felix will attempt the Edge of Space Sky Jump again is not known. As organisers have said it could be tomorrow, next week, next month or even next year. Watch this space.
