Opinion: Michael Brown, the young black teenager who was shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson, USA, sparking riots, was laid to rest Monday.
His high-profile funeral attracted a great deal of media attention, impassioned speeches and more but that will not bring him back. He is dead - another statistic - another young unarmed black man shot by an increasingly gun happy police force.
That may not sound a fair assessment but it is how people in other countries view easy gun use in the USA.
Sometimes you have to step away from a situation to be able to consider what is going on. Those involved; those who live in parts of America affected; are too embroiled perhaps to see what is happening.
One thing that was shocking was the race hate spewed online following Brown's death and the death of Dillon Taylor. Racists used both deaths for their own agenda; an agenda that seems nothing but hate.
Death threats have been sent and memes of family members issued as a form of threat.
Twitter must have had its work cut out removing offenders assuming it even bothered to try. But it did mean that some interesting as well as hateful images were displayed, like the one shown here.
To this writer it is still the easy use of guns in the USA that is at the root of the problem along with die-hard mentalities stuck in the old slavery days. Little wonder the world is increasingly troubled. Little wonder the USA appears on the brink.
Poverty increases hate and xenophobia and maybe in turn it is fuelling the old racial tensions. The USA in line with other western countries is experiencing an increase in the rich poor divide; a recipe for disaster.
Race hate works both ways for sure. As a white person that maybe easy to say but it is true. During a previous conversation with a black American this writer was put in her place and told that was not true; it could only be white on black as white's held all the winning cards. That is not a true assessment.
But how can any decent person look on social media such as Twitter and not be appalled at the hate spewed by white racists in the USA.
Michael Brown's family asked for calm Monday as their boy's funeral took place. They showed dignity in their grief. It is a shame that the race bigots cannot be so dignified.
