The fall out from whistleblower Edward Snowden's spying revelations continues as the German foreign ministry summons the British ambassador to respond on spying allegations. "German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle had requested the attendance of Simon McDonald to respond to the claims", a ministry spokesman said.
Media sources are citing a report in the Independent which accuses the UK of running spy centres from the heart of Berlin, even after the US pulled out. Is the UK acting hand in hand with the US are is Britain running its own self-serving spy operations now?
GCHQ, Britain's government communiations headquarters, is at the centre of any UK spy operations.
The Independent report begins:
Concerns were raised tonight that Britain operates a top-secret listening post from its Berlin embassy to eavesdrop on the seat of German power.
If the UK is using hi-tech equipment housed on its Berlin embassy roof, Berlin says it is breaking international law.
Certainly if a foreign power, such as Iran, was intercepting messages via a spy system housed in or on one of its foreign embassies there would be outrage.
At this time the British Foreign Office has confirmed the meeting took place but revealed little else.
Updates to follow.
