Is it 2013 in your part of the World yet?
Here in the UK there are around seven hours to go.
How you will remember 2012 will be personal to you. Ill health, bereavement, unemployment and more could make it a year to forget.
Then again marriage, the birth of a child, a substantial win of money, regaining good health and more could make it your stand out year for the right reasons.
Around the world many people have had a tough year. In Europe the ongoing economic crisis is proving hard to resolve. As we look to start a New Year more people In Europe will be poorer than at the start of 2012. Bankers and politicians who many people view as part of the economic crisis problem will be laughing all the way to the bank.
The Arab Spring which many people thought would see a peaceful 2012 in the Middle East did not really come to fruition. For each step forward three were taken back. Syria is the most notable country set to either implode or explode but it is not alone. It may be receiving a fairly high amount of publicity but others are far from settled. Conflict involving the West could come by way of Korea, Iran, Russia, China, Ourselves or Israel. That list is far from exhaustive.
The U.S.A. was busy in 2012 with its seemingly never ending election. A round of elections to elect the Republican nomination led to a briefer struggle to elect the next President. During the election campaigns gun control and the fiscal cliff were pushed to one side. Neither candidate wanted to alienate any section of the electorate. In what was undoubtedly a surprise for Republicans President Obama was re-elected. Within a short time the spector of gun control and the fiscal cliff had come to haunt him.
Neither issue is satisfactorily resolved yet. In the wake of the Sandy Hook mass killings there seemed a mood for more gun control in the USA. As predicted this soon vanished. It will return again of course with the next atrocious gun crime, but will it simply be empty words and sentiment?
The fiscal cliff is proving a hard one for the President to resolve. As 2013 approaches in the USA so does the Fiscal Cliff. The time when tax breaks end and without a brokered deal US taxpayers will see a huge increase in their tax bills. Will good sense prevail in time or will those who can least afford to take a tax hike lose out?
Around the world much has happened including many natural disasters brought on by extreme weather.
Our obsession with violence and destruction at our own hands continues to baffle many, including me. With so many potential threats out to get us why do we add more to the list?
Happy New Year to all and may 2013 bring what you want or should that be what you deserve?
