C.N.N. reports "Russia's Foreign Ministry said it hoped the observers' work would "help to overcome the internal Ukrainian crisis, stop rampant nationalist banditry, eradicate ultra-radical tendencies, help achieve national reconciliation and social respect, political, linguistic, educational, cultural and religious rights of the people in all regions of Ukraine."
And Russia has said that it will retain the right to enter Ukraine to protect ethnic Russians from a perceived or real fascist threat.
Opinion: There are too many sercrets and lies surrouding events in the Ukraine. There are also groups of people working to other agendas. This will make peace in the region difficult. Will the presence of O.S.C.E. monitors help? We have to hope that it does.
Sanctions against Russia are now in place but Putin has mocked many, even saying he would open a bank account for his salary in a U.S. sanctioned Russian bank.
The U.S. would like the cash-strapped E.U. to impose more sanctions on Russia but the E.U. has trade links with Russia. Can we afford sactions? Can we afford not to have sanctions? This will depened on where you think the Ukrainian crisis may be headed.
It may also depend where you live in the world. After all the U.S. is a long way from Europe.
