The President of Iraq Jalal Talabani has been taken to hospital after suffering a stroke. Media sources in the UK are reporting this breaking news and at the moment details are sketchy.
Late yesterday there were reports that he was unwell but at that time there was no diagnosis other than possible fatigue. Leaders tend to be older people who are faced with many stresses and strains due to their work.
Today the news is that he was rushed to hospital and is being treat in Baghdad. A decision as to whether he is flown to another country for further treatment is expected to follow.
The President was treated for a Stroke in 2009, then aged 73. He was flown to Jordan at that time for treatment.
Mr Talabani has been recognised as a unifying force in Iraq and even a temporary absence from office could throw a spanner in the works.
