Whether it is political posturing or reality the news is that Israel is preparing for War. Today media sources have shown the Israeli authorities issuing gas masks, testing early warning systems and the like. A widely held opinion now is that it is just a matter of time before Israel or Iran launch an attack on the other.
Israel clearly wants to attack Iran before it manages to develop a nuclear arsenal. Their greatest fear seems to be that Iran should have the same military capability as it does. Over the last few weeks there have been signs that Israel is in War mode. Changes to military conscription were one such sign.
In the past Iran has threatened Israel with a possible attack in the future. Whether that country is developing nuclear weapons and prepared to go to war with Israel is not clear. Rumours and "Spin" is not hard evidence.
Many people believe that the current conflict in Syria has been engineered or at the least exacerbated by the West in order to destabilise the region. Syria as a supporter of Iran could be seen as a threat. If its regime is toppled and the country is in ruins it would be a different tale.
You may feel that Israel has a right to defend itself but as the threat from Iran is as yet vague it is in fact acting in a provocative manner. It once again appears to be warmongering.
Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu is confident that his forces could target Iran's nuclear research facilities. He also seems confident that any resulting conflict will be brief. Much of this depends on Syria, Russia, NATO, the UN and other countries around the World. There is a lot at stake for us all.
The GOP Presidential hopeful in the US, Mitt Romney and others in his Party, have made it plain they will stand with Israel. He has already given his blessing to what Israel chooses to call a possible preemptive strike on Iran. If it happens it should be called what it is, an Act of War.
There are no easy answers to the growing divide between Iran and Israel. Does the World though want another War? Those banging the drum and shouting Yes had better do more than that then, and become actively involved, rather than expect others to lay down their lives.
People in Israel are divided over their government's stance. Some view them as warmongering. Others believe that no country will dare mess with Israel. Is it worth taking the chance though?
