Yesterday Palestine was voted into "existence" in the UN. Israel and the US were not happy with the vote. Today an Israeli official announced that the country will push ahead with construction plans which are bound to antagonise Palestinians.
Israel will build 3,000 new settler homes in east Jerusalem and the West Bank.
According to RT, "The official confirmed a report that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had decided to build the 3,000 units in response to the Palestinians’ success at the UN, AFP reported. The decision was first revealed in a tweet by the diplomatic correspondent of Haaretz newspaper. It said some of the homes would be built in E1, a contentious area of the West Bank. It links east Jerusalem with Maaleh Adumim settlement."
Israel also plans to speed up the processing of 1,000 planning permission requests. The USA has in our opinion rightly said that all of these proposals by Israel are counterproductive.
The new builds will in effect split the West Bank in Two. This will limit the possibility of a united Palestine. Israel knows that Palestine will not participate in peace talks as long such building continues. This means that Israel knew the announcement would be viewed by Palestinians as provocative.
For a long time Israel has played the aggressor whilst attempting to lay all blame at the door of Palestine. It is a fact that a fact that rockets have been launched from Gaza aimed at hitting Israel. Palestinians however have experienced restrictions for some years at the hands of Israel and an ever increasing encroachment on their lands.
The timing of the Israeli announcement shows that Israel's only mission is to win. Compromise is not part of their agenda. Whether the 2013 election is playing a part in PM Netanyahu's decision making is not known. It could be however.
Right now Israel is on course to test the West.
