Op-Ed: A second un-crewed ship carrying migrants has been located heading for Italy. The vessel lost power in rough seas.
The vessel, Ezadeen, has spotted drifting off the coast of Italy. The Italian coastguard rescued an estimated 450 migrants, mainly Syrians from the ship.
Callous human traffickers are making big money out of the many crisis hitting parts of the Middle East and Africa. But among the desperate migrants potential terrorists may lurk, known criminals, rapists and killers or the sick carrying a range of deadly diseases.
That will make the humanitarian crisis greater.
The Ezadeen was flying under the flag of Sierra Leone a country struggling to cope with the deadly disease Ebola. The ship is believed to have sailed out of Turkey however.
The EU still has wealth for its bureaucrats but with most member states piling austerity measures on citizens xenophobia is on the rise. Poverty at home will do nothing to increase compassion. The plight of refugees is just one added burden in the 21st Century.
Two days ago around 1,000 migrants were rescued from a ship, the Blue Sky M, that had been set on a course and then abandoned by its crew; it looks like a new form of piracy.
When the first drama unfolded on board another ship in the area there were reports that armed men were on board the "Moldovan-flagged Blue Sky M, which was sailing in poor weather near the tiny island of Othonoi, northwest of Corfu", one of the Greek Ionian Islands.
That ship was intercepted and the vessel and migrants on board were safely taken to port.
What will happen to the migrants now though?
How long before another boat load of undocumented migrants are left abandoned?
