24-year-old Jared Lee Loughner has been sentenced to life in jail. In January 2011 Loughner launched a gun attack in Arizona. His actions led to the deaths of six people and injury of others.Among the seriously injured was Democratic politician Gabby Giffords.
Images of Loughner which were displayed in the media following the attack appeared to show a man who was not sane. It seems that Loughner "copped a plea" in some way and so opted to plead guilty. Doing so guaranteed that he would not receive the death penalty.
It now seems most likely that Jared Loughner will end his days in a psychiatric unit of a prison. He will never be able to apply for parole. His plea bargain was done three months ago. It led to Lougher pleading guilty to 19 charges in total.
Although the Federal charges have been answered Loughner could face a further trial in Arizona.
Loughner was clearly not of sound mind. He was assessed as unfit to stand trial some time ago but following forced treatment for schizophrenia was declared fit to stand trial.
In court Loughner came face to face with some of his victims including Gabby Giffords and her husband. He addressed Loughner on behalf of his wife. In spite of the obvious emotions of Giffords and her husband Mark, Loughner did not bat an eyelid. Loughner had said before today that he would remain silent and he was true to his word.
