Remember the elderly lady who added her own brush strokes to a valuable fresco? Cecilia Gimenez who is aged in her 80s thought she would undertake an impromptu restoration to a fresco of Christ. Maybe the fact that she had the wherewithal to hand meant it was not quite so impromptu.
Whatever the truth behind her actions she managed to ruin the already delicate and aging fresco. Her handiwork left the fresco needing even more restoration. The 19th century fresco is located in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church in Borja, near Zaragoza, Spain.
Once the ruined fresco was shown on world wide television services it attracted a huge amount of interest. So much so that tourist trips were organised to view the "restored" work of art. Now it seems the culprit, that is the would be restorer, wants royalties.
Her lawyers claim that Ms Gimenez merely wants the law of the land to be upheld. They say that she does not want to gain from any monies awarded. Instead she will give any money paid to charitable causes.
The elderly woman insists that she had permission from a priest to carry out the work. If she did it is doubtful that.he had any idea what the result would be.
It does appear though that she is not as daft as many had thought.
