The man most remembered for his role as ten-gallon hat wearing J R Ewing in the TV series Dallas has died. It was announced that he died aged 81 Friday November 23, 2012, after a long battle with cancer. Added to this Larry had battled cirrhosis of the liver.
Larry died in a hospital in Texas reportedly with long time friend and fellow Dallas actress, Linda Gray, at his side. Very fitting as the pair played a married couple in the original Dallas series. There on screen relationship was far from harmonious though.
Larry was the son of Mary Martin a well known actress. He and Mom performed together at the Royal Variety performance in the UK in 1980. It was at the time of "Dallas" fever. The UK TV viewers of the time were head over heels in love with Dallas. The show spawned a wave a women wearing clothes with huge shoulder pads. This was extended when Dynasty hit the air waves.
At one time the biggest question in the UK was " Who shot JR" Such was the draw of Dallas and Hagman that there were few people in the UK who had not heard that question.
Larry Hagman however had a long standing acting career before Dallas. Some of his films may not have been A Movies and some of the roles minor but he was a busy actor. Dallas however sealed Larry's place in acting history.
Dallas has been re-invented and re-made. The latest version is currently on air in the UK. It is doubtful that it will reach the dizzy heights of Dallas but you never know. Harry in spite of health problems was a part of this show too.
Whilst we in the UK remember Larry for Dallas in the USA he was also famous for his role in I Dream of Jeannie in a sixties sitcom.
Larry's family in announcing his death said, "Larry was back in his beloved hometown of Dallas, re-enacting the iconic role he loved the most," "Larry's family and closest friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday." What more could you ask for?
