Since the tragic mass shooting in December, at the Sandy Hook School Newton, many words have been written and spoken about the USA and its apparent love affair with guns. The USA appears a divided nation. Whilst many Americans see the need for change many more are loathe to surrender their Second Amendment. This is a part of the American Constitution that some claim gives Americans the 'right to bear arms'.
This right is taken out of context and interpreted for people's own ends, time and again.
Wayne LaPierre the leader of the US gun lobby, the NRA, national rifle association, has on more than one occasion preached that it is not guns that kill but gun users. His idea to prevent more mass shootings in American schools was to suggest using armed guard in these facilities. In other words more guns to cure a gun problem.
He continued to talk about the 'good guys' with guns. What happens though when a good guy goes bad?
Police in Los Angeles are hunting a suspected gunman. Christopher Dorner, 33, is suspected of committing three murders and the authorities want to locate him before he kills again. Dorner is a former police officer and soldier. Yes a good guy gone bad.
Police in San Bernardino are currently searching Big Bear Valley. Schools have been put on lockdown. Police have already found a Nissan pickup truck belonging to Christopher Dorner but the trail went cold. Dorner has been on the run for a week or so and is proving a tough nut to track down.
He will have learned expertise in the use of weapons, tracking, hiding out and more during his police and military career. A useful man until things went wrong. This is the problem.
Last weekend a couple, Keith Lawrence and Monica Quan, were killed. Monica was the daughter of Randy Quan, a retired police officer. An officer who Dorner blamed for his sacking five-years earlier. A deadly revenge attack. On Wednesday Dorner allegedly attacked two others, killing one. Thursday he is accused of injuring two more people.
Dorner has posted a sick manifesto online detailing his plans and his issues. Dorner claims that he was racially abused as a child but also claims that he now views Asians as potential targets for his bullets. An obviosuly sick individual, police are working hard to catch Dorner. It is likely that he will prefer to die in an attempt to out fox the law than be arrested.
Obviously citizens in the area are warned to take extra care. Dorner is described as black, six feet (1.80 meters) tall and 270 pounds (120 kilograms) in weight. Police and FBI agents are protecting around 40 possible targets, identified by Dorner online.
So Mr LaPierre, what happens when a good guy with a gun goes bad?
