Police in France blamed an alleged family dipsute over inheritance as the cause. Links to Iraq were also investigated as Mr al-Hilli, an Iraqi born British citizen, had worked as a satellite engineer in that country.
Either way police were sure that the al-Hillis were the target and that the reason lay in the UK.
The cyclist was believed to have been an innocent passer-by who was caught up in a murder. Tuesday's arrest, of a 48-year-old man living in the Chevaline area, close to the murder scene, reverses earlier thinking. It follows the release of an identi-kit image of a man seen on a motorbike in the area.
Wednesday the Annecy prosecutor, Eric Maillaud, confirmed a man from the Haute-Savoie region had been arrested and was being held in custody adding "This arrest, which may not be the only one, was the result of witness statements."
