Opinion: Cherie Blair the wife of former UK PM Tony Blair, Labour, will be 60 on September 23 but according to various media sources her husband threw a surprise birthday party for her Friday. As he is the UN's highly paid Middle East Peace Envoy understandably many people are angry and shocked that he partied the night away as Gaza burned.
As questions are raised about Blair's absence from the Middle East, his Israeli bias and his role in general the Independent reports "A spokesperson for Mr Blair said: "Tony Blair has been constantly in touch over the weekend on the crisis in the Middle East including talking to John Kerry and he will return to the region this week. He cares passionately about what is happening in the Middle East and will do anything he can to help the situation there.""
Well there you go; how reassuring.
The Friday night bash included entertainment such as impersonator Bobby Davro who mimicked Blair during his performance later tweeting “Wonderful gig at Tony and Cherie Blairs [sic] crib in Aylesbury What a lovely family I hope Tony enjoyed my impression of him Thank you.”
The entertainment and three-course-meal provided will have set back Mr Blair a great deal of money but then he can afford it. He cashed in big style from his political career. Other past and present Labour politicians attended but surely they knew how it would be construed. There were also armed security officials but who paid for them is not known.
The Mail Online reports that one guest was Ed Miliband the current leader of the Labour Party but the best advice to give him is stay well clear or you will be tarnished by your association with Tony Blair.
If Blair and his guests cared one iota about the crisis in the Middle East and the suffering in Gaza the meal would have stuck in their gullets. As it is people are commenting on Blair’s similarities to Roman despot Caligula. Read - Sack Blair campaign and the Killing of Tony Blair
We are all entitled to some "me" time especially when we are working hard. However Blair's track record in the Middle East appears appalling.
Nero allegedly fiddled while Rome burnt and little has changed. The Middle East Peace Envoy parties as people, children and babies are murdered sometimes in their beds in Gaza. Shame on him. Sources: Independent Mail Online
