Neil Armstrong, who will go down in history as the First Man to Walk on the Moon, has died aged 82, from complications following cardiovascular surgery.
Those of us old enough well remember the grainy, grey images on our basic TV sets of that first Moon walk. It was a time of hope and promise for the earth and its inhabitants.
Years later conspiracy theorists made films and wrote articles denying that any astronaut had ever landed on the Moon. They made a strong case but for us those early astronauts remain amazing pioneers.
More than 40 years ago members of the Space progam lit our imaginations and showed that there are no permanent boundaries to our travels, just ones that have not yet been broken.
In 1969 when the US space pioneers landed on the Moon they were using relativley basic equipment and computer systems. This makes their achievemets all the more spectacular.
Neil Armstrong remained a level headed indvidual in spite of his amazing feat. His famous quote at the time of the Moon landing was "One small step for (a) man , one giant step for Mankind.
