Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York has been pushing for tighter gun controls, following the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre in December 2012. The powerful gun lobby, the NRA, in the USA has been doing its damndest to maintain the status quo on guns or even increase the number in the hands of citizens. Bloomberg has made enemies by his tough talk on guns and now it seems some of his opposition are prepared to hit out.
Bloomberg received two anonymous threatening ricin-laced letters. The letters tested positive for ricin which is a deadly poison. Bloomberg may of course have other enemies but the wording of at least one of the letters indicates a gun motive. Sky News reports: One letter was opened on Friday in New York at the city's mail facility, the other on Sunday in Washington DC at the headquarters of a nonprofit organisation Mr Bloomberg supports, Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
Both letters contained threats related to the gun-control debate and an oily pinkish-orange substance, the New York Police Department said.
Mr Bloomberg confirmed at least one of the letters "referred to our anti-gun efforts".
"But there's 12,000 people that are going to be killed this year with guns and 19,000 are going to commit suicide with guns, and we are not going to walk away from those efforts," he vowed."
Some of those investigating these letters have shown symptoms of ricin poisoning but not all that had contact have. Police say that further tests will be required to establish the potency of the mail. A spate of ricing laced mailings have reached some politicians in the USA since October.
The FBI are working with New York Police officers on the investigation.
