Op-Ed: America is dominating the news this week. Its recurring presence in news reports has tended to be due to the issues of gun control. We have followed the story as it has unfolded for some time. Mass killings in Wisconcin, Aurora and Connecticut shocked America to the core. There have been so many more, of course. Remember Gabby Giffords? It was the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting which looked set to finally herald a change in gun laws.
Since the last tragedy, in December, politicians in the USA have been looking to find a workable solution. All sections have been consulted, including the National Rifle Association of America. No-one expected it to be easy.
Extremists blackened the debate and used offensive comparisons to abortion and more. The second amendment of the US Constitution was held firmly to the breast of die-hard gun enthusiasts. As TEK blogger Julia pointed out that was selective. Other sections of the constitution have been less closely guarded.
In the end it seems that it will all boil down to politics and money. Whether you lean to the right or left of politics, or remain centered, misuse of weapons, and their easy access should be a cause for concern. Instead of fearing an armed intruder entering your property, you may left terrified of the thought that you neighbour is armed to the teeth.
With the best will in the world no US leader is a miracle-worker. Sadly that is what it will take, unless someone is prepared to make a stand. To come out fighting, in the proverbial sense. Compromise will be key.
The latest effort by the NRA is the ad shown above. Offensive and repugnant to most right-minded individuals it is the truth and more to some gun supporters in the USA.
OPINION: On the world stage we all make judgements about other nationalities. Usually it is a little we have gleaned from TV or the Internet. We may visited for a brief vacation but that just offers a selective glimpse into the country and its people. Heck, in some cases it is a visit to an all-inclusive resort, which is never left during your stay.
Watching President Obama and Joe Biden yesterday, as they tried to announce proposals, which will help America in its fight against gun crime, the conclusion was that they showed sincerity and compassion. The problem is though that when you try to appease both sides in an argument you often fail. Whilst in some cases both sides have valid arguments you have to stand up for your beliefs else they became muddled and tainted.
Extreme gun supporters in the USA used the fact that the President had children on stage present as a negative. The NRA has now carefully chosen its words to reach out to the 'gun nuts' in the USA. That is the only conclusuon you can draw when you watch the ad. If people need to have an explanation as to why a President may need an armed guard and a member of the public cannot run around with an assault rifle you have to despair. After all America is no stranger to assassination of leaders.
Of course much of the hype in the USA relates to the fat cats who are getting rich on America's obsession to arm itself. After each massacre people buy more weapons and dealers laugh all the way to rthe bank. Currently weapons are being stock-piled ahead of a possible clamp-down and there is big money being made. Being made at the expense of the victims.
Hell, do you think that the NRA are supplying the shooters who carry out these crimes just to improve trade? Sounds silly and offensive? Yes in much the same way the drivel coming out of the NRA does.
Note: We have not described the ad. It is up to you if you choose to watch it. Remember even bad publicity will be welcome publicity for gun dealers in the USA.
