The trial of Oscar Pistorius kicked off Monday in South Africa. In February 2013 the so-called Blade Runner, Oscar Pistorius, 26, spectacularly fell from grace when he shot and killed his girlfriend of three months, Reeva Steenkamp, 29, but was it cold-blooded murder or a tragic accident?
Oscar was bailed leading to accusations that he was being treat differently to other murder suspects in South Africa. His bail was set at R1million (£74,000; $110,000) and the trial date set. In March bail restrictions were eased and Oscar enjoyed six months of relative freedom. The Sun publication in the UK showed images of Oscar out kayaking ahead of his forthcoming trial. The image was accompanied by typical Sun text and an outlandish headline but trial by the media should never be an option. Pistorious faces trial by a judge and two assistants, not trial by jury. This is normal practise in South Africa. South African trials are not routinely filmed but the Pistorius case is a high profile one and of interest to many people around the world. This means that cameras are allowed in court but with limited access. It has led to news sources such as Sky News TV and BBC News 24 in the UK following the trial live on air. In court Monday Oscar pleaded not guitly to the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and witnesses are now giving evidence. An early witness, a neighbour described events and hearing a woman, allegedly Steenkamp scream out, "The fear in that woman's voice is difficult to explain to the court...It was a very emotional situation to hear...the petrified screams and shouts...it wasn't just another evening, it was extremely emotional."
Family members of both Steenkamp and Pistorius are in court. Reeva's father is not present however due to ill health. He has suffered a near fatal stroke. Reeva's mother, June, was reportedly on the verge of tears even as she arrived at court. "June Steenkamp, 67, sat on the front bench of the public gallery which is just a few feet from the dock where Pistorius will sit throughout the trial." She said she had sat close to the dock as she wants Oscar to look her in the eye. During last year's hearings he kept his head bowed at all times and looked visibly shaken.
It is only day one but TEK will follow this trial as it gets into full swing. Sources: Sky News Related reading:
