News that the Saudis sent death-row prisoners to fight Assad forces in Syria though cast more doubt over the rebels. The mainstream media is full of tales and counter-tales of atrocities in Syria but we still do not know just who the rebels are?
Saudi had links to Osama Bin Laden but even that was not enough to cool relations between that country and the west.
In 2001 the transcript of a BBC Newsnight includes "In the eight weeks since the attacks [9/11], over 1,000 suspects and potential witnesses have been detained. Yet, just days after the hijackers took off from Boston aiming for the Twin Towers, a special charter flight out of the same airport whisked 11 members of Osama Bin Laden's family off to Saudi Arabia. That did not concern the White House.
Their official line is that the Bin Laden family are above suspicion - apart from Osama, the black sheep, who they say hijacked the family name. That's fortunate for the Bush family and the Saudi royal household, whose links with the Bin Laden family could otherwise prove embarrassing. But Newsnight has obtained evidence that the FBI was on the trail of other members of the Bin Laden family for links to terrorist organizations before and after September 11th."
Conspiracy theories abound but it is difficult to ignore the hypocrisy of the west in how it treats various countries of the Middle East.
In March 2013 Prince Charles and his wife Camilla stopped by a Syrian refugee camp during a nine-day Middle East tour. The propaganda photo-shoot highlighted the plight of Syrian refugees but did Charles have his own agenda for the visit? He was reportedly on the tour as a trade mission, for the UK government. Was he priming the UK for sympathy, enough to allow a military strike? It did not take long for the British government and the USA to plan a military strike against Syria which was thwarted when Labour leader Ed Miliband voted a resounding NO.
So what this writer is wondering is what will the royal couple's current tour of the Middle East lead to? As they say watch this space. Charles may look the fool dancing in Arab dress but he is far from that.
