Firefighters have rescued a baby from a sewage pipe in China. Unbelievably the new born baby was lodged in a sewer pipe leading from a toilet. The baby's cries were heard and rescue services were called.
The drama unfolded in the Jinhua city, Zhejiang province, China, Saturday. Residents in a building heard a baby crying and a rescue followed. Firefighters tried to pull the distraught infant from the pipe but to no avail. The pipe was cut free with the baby lodged inside.
The pipe holding the trapped baby was taken to a hopistal were medical professionals carefully removed the pipe freeing the tiny baby. For now the baby has been named as Baby No 59 and is in a stable condition. Police and the authorities are searching for the parent, classing the case as attempted murder.
China enforces a tough one-child policy. As we reported in September:
The long standing one child policy has been brutally enforced. Now though China is set to lose out as its population becomes an ageing one with a shortage of young people to take over. The policy was introduced in 1978. It was at a time when China's population was increasing and out of control. In line with so many other governments around the world the response when it came was heavy handed. Isn't that so often the case? They not only lock the stable door after the horse has bolted but make changes which are negative.
Whilst this case is shocking many parents in China face challenges we can only imagine. It was however a brutal way to "dispose" of an unwanted child and has faced widespread condemnation in China.
Until the parents are found we can only speculate what happened and why.
