Another day another shoot-out in the USA. In what police describe as a premeditated attack a gunman sprayed bullets from a car in a deadly drive by shooting. Six people died as a result of this person's actions and a seventh was dead later, the gunman, perhaps by his own hand. The massacre took place in the town of Isla Vista near the University of California at Santa Barbara campus. At time of writing the suspected killer is not named. Police have revealed that they are investigating a 22-year-old man who posted a video on youtube which appears to link to the killings. The man in the video complains that he is a virgin and often rebuffed by young women. Reuters reports ""I will have my revenge against humanity," he says, vowing to retaliate with a mass slaughter of college students and Isla Vista residents. "I will punish all of you for it."" In the video he threatens to slaughter "spoilt, stuck-up, blonde" women. Police know the identity of the suspect and will release it when family members have been notified. In the video he threatens to slaughter "spoilt, stuck-up, blonde" women. His revenge was swift as well as deadly. From the time the police received their first 911 call reporting the shooting spree to the time the suspected killer was found dead in his crashed car about 10 minutes elapsed. Ten deadly minutes. Whether the shooter died in a hail of police bullets or by his own hand is not known at this time. According to the BBC he was found dead in his car with a bullet wound to his head. It is unclear whether it was self-inflicted.
It does not take long to wipe out people, a family's hopes and their dreams.
It sounds as if some students had a lucky escape as witnesses retell their experiences. Some ran from the scene. However witness Xavier Mozejewski who said the shooting was like an "old Western shoot-out" unwittingly assesses a great deal of what is wrong with the USA and its gun culture. Americans do not live in the Wild West. If the country becomes that again it will in part be down to their gun culture and mentality to "draw" on a whim. The latest news is that Hollywood filmmaker Peter Rodger, who was assistant director on The Hunger Games, thinks the attacker was his 22-year-old son Elliot. The youtube footage points to the same conclusion. British born Elliot had Asperger's Syndrome. He found it difficult to form relationships and friendships and had been receiving professional medical help. His family are helping police with their inquiries and have said they are devastated.
