We people who inhabit planet earth are inquisitive, inventive and so much more. Of course we are also destructive choosing to believe that planet earth is OUR own playground. We tend to forget about the myriad of living creatures who also occupy earth and the environment which we need to survive. We also often forget that for all of Mankind's progress we are still at the mercy of the elements. Nature in the end could seal our fate.
Right now too many people around the world look set to wage war or follow a self motivated path to destruction. 2012 has been a year of extreme weather patterns resulting in loss of lives. Now the Sun is going to join in.
Solar storms could cause a range of problems around the world including interference with communications and power. The Sun's activity is about to reach a ten-year peak. Cycles of activity are nothing new for the sun but each ten yers things will have changed on earth. We have become much more reliant on technology these days.
The last serious solar storm was apparently 150 years ago. In theory though they can cause problems every ten years. It seems that the earth is long overdue a damaging solar storm.
Such is the current concern that Solar Storms are now being included in emergency disaster planning. So why are solar storms something to cause us concern? According to SkyNews "The threat comes from magnetically-charged plasma thrown out by the sun in coronal mass ejections. Like vast bubbles bursting off the sun's surface, they send millions of tons of gas racing through space that can engulf the Earth with as little as one day's warning. They trigger geomagnetic storms which can literally melt expensive transformers in national power grids."
The Earth, Science and nature never cease to amaze, do they?
For now it is a case of wait and see., as scientists monitor the situation and authorities plan for the worst case scenario.
