Before Christmas former Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi announced his engagement to,and love for, 27-year-old Francesca Pascale. For many it was not simply that Berlusconi was alomst 50 years her senior but that he still had his second wife to contend with.
This week that wife, Veronica Lario was awarded alimony paymements. They were set at surely a record breaking 3 million euros a month. That equates to £2.45 million. It does of course give an insight into the wealth of the man.
The legal separation was agreed on Christmas Day 2012 and means that Silvio will retain all properties and business interests. To agree to such high alimony payments you have to assume that these other interests are lucrative.
Whilst many in Italy will think that the huge payouts are a price Berlusconi should pay for his behaviour most will balk at the amount Ms Lario will receive. During such tough economic times Italians, like most Europeans, are having to tighten their belts and are being told that there are no easy hand outs. It seems that is not the case for a former Prime Minister's ex wife.
100,000 Euros a day is an obscene amount of money. What justifies such an amount? How can a failed former leader have so much money to play around with whilst the country struggles to survive economically?
Berlusconi's relationship with Veronica spanned three decades. A million euros a month for each decade?
