Opinion and background: Spain's marches for dignity are reminiscent of the U.K. Jarrow march of the 20th century depression era and others from that period of history. The weather may be kinder than it was to those previous Jarrow marchers but the marching is as tough.
Marches for Dignity have been taking place across Spain and they will end March 22 in Madrid for a huge rally.
Democratic Underground says: "A reminder: the marches are being organized by the likes of 15-M (the indignados) and PAH (platform against evictions). 15-M has 75% popular support, according to El Pais. This is gonna be big, in Madrid and in Spain. I'm curious to see how the MSM treats it. Read about it at rev news first, did see a segment on RT just now. If people have other sources, please add! Ah, I see El Pais (in spanish) has an article about it."
You can read more at Revolution news where the marchers aims are set out as - No to paying the debt, No to more cuts, Out governments Troika, plus Bread, work and shelter for all.
In a nutshell "In the Spanish State there are hundreds of thousands of us who have lost our homes or who don’t receive benefits for dependents. There are more than 6 million of us without paid work and unemployed. We’ve got tens of thousands of working people without any unemployment benefits at all".
Banks have foreclosed and many citizens have lost their homes. For them the EU dream is a nightmare.
As the EU prepares to stand behind the Ukraine and its new unelected interim government, pledging billions of euros in aid, it is hard ignore the warning signs.
In the run up to the second world war many of the same global conditions applied. Austerity, poverty, an increase in nationalism, a feeling that change was necessary and so much more. WWWIII may not be here but we can hardly say the world is at peace.
For some of us we are lucky to live in peaceful countries but too many other world citizens cannot say the same. However, even countries 'at peace' are facing tough times and unrest.
