There is news of coordinated car bomb attacks at a joint US Afghan base in Afghanistan today. Three Afghan soldiers and two civilians are reported to have been killed. There are reports of at least 15 people sustaining injuries also.The attacks at Forward Operating Base Fenty, near the Jalalabad Airfield, happened early this morning, Sunday December 2, 2012.
The attacks have been described as "complex" which would seem to indicate that insurgents are becoming more organised.
Around 5am local time a bomb was detonated close to the camp's main gates. As another bomb was detonated outside of the camp Afghan and Us soldiers responded. They opened fire and it must be fair to say that chaos will have ensued. In the firefight which followed all of the attackers were allegedly killed.
A local police spokesman claimed that the three suicide bombers and six gunmen were killed either in the explosions or the gunfight.
A Taliban spokesman contacted the media claiming responsibilty and duisputing the official repots. He maintained that a suicde attacker killed at least 20 people when he detonated the explosive belt he was wearing.
The Nangarhar, Province has proved a diffcult battle to win. Insurgents remain active in the region with attacks happening frequently. Their main target appears to be the airfield.
