21-year-old Utah man Zachary Weston stands charged with murder. The murder of the woman he shared a home with, his 84-year-old Grandmother. When police arrived at the house on October 3, 2012 they were greeted by a bloody scene. Joyce Dexter's throat had been cut but there was worse to come.
Police had been called to the house in Salt Lake City following reports of screams coming from the building. Weston has since told police that he removed some of his Grandmother's internal organs. He was close to the woman's body when police arrived. His clothing was covered in blood. He was holding a bloodied knife. Joyce had been stabbed 111 times.
Reportedly Weston has suffered from mental illness for some time. This is not his first violent attack on a family member. All but Joyce had washed their hands of him but she perservered. For that she has paid a terrible price.
As recently as September 2012 Weston was charged with an assault on his father. In August there were other assault charges, including on a police officer and a hospital worker. Just why no stronger action was taken is not known. It certainly sounds like Weston was a disaster waiting to happen.
The 21-year-old could now face the death penalty if convicted of aggravated murder. Weston's police convictions date back at least a couple of years. Psychiatric reports did nothing to treat this man nor prevent him committing further assaults, and murder.
