Chuck Hagel, President Obama's controversial new Defense Secretary, announced Saturday that America is boosting its capabilities along its western shore. As Sky News reports "the US is beefing up its domestic missile defense systems with new interceptors after recent threats of a nuclear attack by North Korea".
Just who you believe is responsible for the latest spat could depend upon your nationality, your political leanings and whether you look beyond mainstream media and propaganda.
North Korea may blame the US for the situation, citing ongoing sanctions and tough new measures, whilst the US condemns North Norea for its sabre rattling tactics of testing nuclear weapons. In the past year North Korea has tested three nuclear missiles.
Before going any further consider this historical fact. The only country, as yet, to use nuclear weapons in war, or for real, is the USA. The US abruptly ended World War Two when they dropped two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki causing widescale death, horror and destruction.
Of course, at the time only the US had that capability. Yes, they like to stay one step ahead of the pack, if they can. Whether other countries would have acted in the same manner is debatable. Currently the USA tries hard to prevent new nations gaining "the bomb". It does not however surrender its own powers nor behave responsibly.
America has been militarily active in many countries around the world. Sometimes the missions are covert other times they are out in the open. The list of countries is almost endless with Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Iraq, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Cuba, Russia, China and more all experiencing sanctions or action some of the time. It is fair to say that America has made many enemies around the world.
American agents have launched kill missions rather than capture and the administration regularly sends unmanned drones into countries to kill suspects. The targets are often not proven criminals nor terrorists. The countries, such as Pakistan, are not at war with the US. Imagine if the roles were reversed!
When a crime is committed police consider known enemies first. Where on earth would they start with the USA?
It is bad news that relations between North Korea and America are on a downward spiral. They are still at the bluff stage with both sides yapping at each other. The tone is becoming more threatening but there is still time for agreement. That time will not be open forever.
Chuck Hagel told reporters that America was now acting in order to stay one step ahead of North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-Un. Well it will keep the American peoples' minds away from the imminent fiscal cliff we suppose. There is always money for weapons and conflict.
Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has announced the addition of 14 interceptors in Alaska, a nearly 50% increase in defence capability.
The new interceptors, added to the 30 already installed in California and Alaska, will improve the military's ability to shoot down missiles in flight before they reach the US.
Mr Hagel said the US is also working with Japan to deploy new radar systems that could better track and provide warning of any missile launched by the Communist regime.
Kim Jong-Un greets troops on a visit to a military installment The Pentagon is also studying the feasibility of alternative missile defence system sites in other parts of the US, he said.
Officials do not believe North Korea is capable of carrying out a nuclear attack on the US, but the recent threat has added to tensions between the two countries.
The defence system has existed since 2004, when the George W Bush administration built it in response to threats from North Korea.
That is any person's guess. Americans have not experienced bombing such as that in Europe during World War Two. Their children have not grown up playing on bomb sites as we did in the UK. Pearl Harbour and 9/11 was the closest they came to war terror on mainland USA. They will stop at nothing to prevent a mainland attack yet they act in a way which could result in one. No person wants war, or at least they should not.
When Obama appointed Chuck Hagel, a man with a bad track record, it was telling. Perhaps he is the right man for the job at this time. America has so many enemies, and the world is such a war torn place right now, courtesy of the USA, that World War Three could explode out of anywhere and at anytime. If it does defences could be meaningless.
