Allegations that the rebels are using sophisticated weaponry point to Russian involvement claims the White House. In Odessa, in the south west of the country, at least 31 people died in a fire in an official building amid violence. Many died as they jumped from the burning building. A government offensive in Sloviansk reportedly resulted in the death of many separatists. Ukraine's interior ministry did not detail how the fire was started."
Reuters reports "A local photographer in Mariupol told Reuters the building was ablaze and that two bodies were lying in the street outside. "One of them is definitely a police officer," he said."
May 9, the Kiev authorities report that at least 21 people have been killed in fighting in the port of Mariupol. Ukrainian forces trying to take back the area met with resistance from local people who have no love nor loyalty for the interim leaders in Kiev. People in eastern Ukraine tend to believe Russian allegations that fascism is on the rise in Ukraine and in Kiev.
Groups of people tried to stand in front of Ukrainian tanks and prevent security forces pushing forward today, so perhaps deaths and injuries were inevitable.
According to the Financial Times "In Ukraine, Arsen Avakov, the interior minister, said the Mariupol clashes were triggered by 60 “terrorists” as the government in Kiev refers to the pro-Russian suporters, armed with automatic weapons who tried to seize the regional police headquarters. The Interfax-Ukraine news agency quoted a police source as saying members of the pro-Russia People’s Republic of Donetsk had seized Mariupol’s police headquarters."
It has been a deadly week in Ukraine.
Call them all what you will, there is no escaping the fact that people are being killed and the situation does not look as if it will be resolved any time soon. As we have commented before, one person's terrorist is another person's hero, and on it goes.
