Both Germany and France booked their places in the final 16 at Brazil 2014 Monday but it was the Germany v Algeria game that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The pace of game was fast and furious with obvious lulls due to the climate. The two big stars of the match were Algeria's goal keeper Rais M'Bolhi and Germany's opposite number Manuel Neuer.
Both men were star players Monday but for different reasons. Neuer prevented Germany being goals down in the early stages of the game by taking on a wider role than goalkeeping. He was out of the goal mouth and in the thick of the game on numerous occasions. M'Bolhi simply proved that he was one of the best goalies around as he stopped Germany sinking more than one in the back of the net.
A ruthless and determined Germany ultimately won through but it was far from an easy victory. The score line was stuck at 0-0 for most of the match a scenario playing out over and over again at Brazil 2014.
Both teams looked fit to collapse and players were dropping like flies as leg cramps gripped and fatigue took hold. A German substitute put a fresh and fit twist on the game and Germany quickly scored as extra-time began. The first goal for Germany came in 92 minutes that is in extra time, when André Schürrle managed to score.
Algeria were not deterred and kept the pressure up but Germany was buoyed by the 1-0 lead and as determined as ever.
One incident in particular marred Germany's performance. The Telegraph reports it this way - "Lahm is booked for hauling back Brahimi by the shorts when he was about to latch on to a pass about 25m out on the left. Lahm is booked for his cynicism." The ITV commentators in the UK simply said he "had to do it". That however is not the way to win a match. The guy's shorts were almost ripped from his back.
There was a little time wasting but then in the 120 minute Mesut Özil put Germany two goals ahead.
Any other team would have crumbled but not Algeria. They had fire in their boots and were finally rewarded with a stunning goal delivered by Abdelmoumene Djabou one minute later.
The game had minutes to run but Algeria still tried for a win but it was not to be.
Kudos to both teams for an excellent match that was exciting to watch and a tense nail-biter.
