The Independent reports "Plant scientists in Britain estimate the latest developments mean that 90 per cent of all current African wheat varieties are now vulnerable to the disease."
Wheat rust can now destroy large areas in next to no time at all.
Scientists in developed countries are working on a genetic breakthrough rather than producing stronger chemical fungicides. And yes the scientists warn that climate change is playing apart in the spread of wheat rust.
Wheat is vital and news that its production is under threat has to be a cause for concern.
Opinion: The dangerous spread of wheat rust may be used to justify genetically modifying seeds and more. We should be careful however that we do not replace one monster with another, larger one.
